DIY Tie-Dye Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup oil (I used Avocado oil)
  • 2 cups of water
  • Food coloring
  • Parchment paper
  • 8″ round pans (3)

Grease all three cake pans and line the bottom with greased parchment paper

Combine both white and yellow cake mix in a large bowl

Add the ingredients according to the directions on the box. The ingredients listed are what my cake mix called for.

Once mixed, separate your cake batter into separate bowls, one for each color. I used 6 colors, it was about 2 cups of batter per bowl. Color each bowl with your preferred colors.

Start by pouring one third of your first color into each pan.

Continue adding the rest of the colors to the center of the pan.

With a skewer or toothpick, drag from the perimeter into the center. Continue this around the entire cake. This is what will give you a tie-dyed effect.

Bake according to the box instructions- Mine took about 45 minutes at 350 degrees F

Allow to cool on a rack for 10 minutes before removing from pans

Once they are cooled start stacking

This is the BEST buttercream icing, it’s by meaningful mama

Put a little icing on the cake board and then add the first layer to the cake board.

Add a generous amount of icing smooth until it just starts to go over the edge.

Add your second layer and press down to help it level out

Add another layer of generous icing just as you did in the previous step

When you add your third layer, you are going to place it upside down so that flat bottom of the cake layer is now the top.

With an offset spatula, add a large dollop of icing to the top and start to smooth it out spreading it down the sides of the cake. This is called a crumb coat. It’s ok if it’s messing and has some crumbs showing. This is like the “primer” for our cake so when you do the next layer of icing it will be clean and smooth with no crumbs!

Place cake in the fridge for about 30 minutes so your crumb coat can set.

Add another coat of icing with your off set spatula starting at the top and working your way down. Use a bench scraper to smooth the sides.

Add sprinkles and you are done!

Slice and enjoy!
