Homemade Pizza

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast or 1 packet
  • 2 tsp honey or sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp cornmeal or semolina flour
  • 1 1/2 cups marinara
  • 8oz mozzarella cheese
  • Romano or Parmesan cheese to taste
  • Toppings of your choice

In a bowl or stand mixer add yeast, 1 tsp honey (or sugar) and 1/4 cup of warm water and allow yeast to proof for 10 minutes.

It should foam like the photo above and almost double in size, if it doesn’t, your yeast is dead, start again.

Once your yeast is proofed, add olive oil, salt, 1 tsp honey, and 2 cups of whole wheat flour.

Mix for a minute or two. If the dough is sticky, add flour 1/4 cup at a time until your dough forms a ball.

Coat a separate bowl in olive oil, add your ball of pizza dough to the bowl, roll ball around in bowl to coat dough in olive oil.

Cover with a damp warm towel and proof for an hour

Dough will double in size

Press or roll your dough out into the shape you’d like your pizza

Add semolina flour or cornmeal to pan (I use an upside-down cook baking pan)

Place dough on baking pan

Brush dough with olive oil and add some coarse salt

Add Sauce, Mozzarella, Parm, and Toppings of Choice

I added: Chicken Italian Sausage, bell peppers, red onion, grape tomatoes, broccoli, olives and a little oregano.

Bake at 500 degrees for 8-10 minutes until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown

Remove from oven and allow to rest for 5 minutes before slicing

Enjoy!
