DIY Tropical Garland

Materials:

  • White Cardstock 12×12
  • Green Cardstock 8 1/2 x 11
  • Glitter Cardstock 12×12
  • Glue dots
  • Jute twine
  • Ruler
  • Cutting Machine (I used my cricut) – Not affiliated or gifted, I paid full price for this machine.

Using Cricut Design space, I searched “banner flags” and found the shape I wanted for my design. I adjusted the size to be 3.5″ x 12″ for each flag. I made enough for each letter, and an additional 6 flags. These extra flags will be the bookends for each word.

I chose my font and printed out “Happy Birthday Romy” on glitter cardstock. I used the font, Babette.

Fold each flag in half to create a 6″ flag.

I lined up each flag on my cutting mat to ensure they were straight and used my 6″ square ruler to center the letters. I slapped some mini glue dots on the back and attached the letters to the flags.

Next I cut out some monstera leaves on my green cardstock and some cute hibiscus flowers on my glitter cardstock. I added one leaf and one flower to 6 of the flags.

If you look closely you can see the mini glue dots above the twine and on the points of the flag.

Next I opened all the flags and added my jute twine to the inside of the fold. I added a few mini glue dots to secure them. Be sure you don’t add the glue dots too close to the twine. You want to be able to adjust each flag when hanging. I left about 5 ft of twine on either side of each word to ensure it would fit in the space. We ended up cutting the excess off after it was hung.

And there you have it! A simple but beautiful custom Birthday banner!
