DIY Piñata Cake

I used the same short cut that I used for Della’s Troll’s cake. I called up the grocery store and ordered a cake from the bakery with no decorations, just a crumb coat. Except this time, I got a second cake because I wanted to make a second tier. I decided to cover the top tier with fondant, I haven’t worked with fondant before so I figured this was as good of a time as any to give it a shot.

I started on the base first, Della helped me make our favorite buttercream by meaningful mama:

  • 1 Cup of Butter
  • 1 Cup of Butter flavored shortening
  • 1tsp Salt
  • 2lbs powdered sugar
  • 6oz heavy cream

Once the buttercream was mixed we divided it into to color it. We matched the icing ruffles to the ruffles on the piñata cake topper.

This next tip is life changing when you are using multiple colors with the same piping tip. Put each color in saran wrap and roll it up.

Place into the fridge to chill for about 10 minutes to set.

Place the plastic wrap bundle into a pre-cut piping bag and pull the excess plastic wrap through the opening of the bag, (where you are going to add the piping tip)

Cut the extra plastic wrap that is sticking out of the bag off.

Add the tip to the bag and you’re ready to start piping. Tisha’s Tip: Use a binder clip to hold your bag closed so you don’t squirt buttercream out the back.

Place a little dollop of icing on a turn table and add the cake, this will help it from moving around. You can also use non slip shelf and drawer liner….(they totally have these at the dollar store).

Hold the wide end of the tip closest to the cake. Apply pressure and as the icing is coming out of the tip, slowly start turning the turn table with the other hand until you make a complete rotation. I did at least two rows of each color.

Continue this step until you make it to the top edge of the cake.

Place this in an airtight cake container and place in the freezer. I made this a little over a week before the party and removed it from the freezer the morning of the party. I added 5 straws to help stabilizer it before I added the top tier.

I used the premade Wilton Fondant, it was AMAZING and very user friendly. This was my first time working with fondant, next time I won’t roll it out quite as thin.

I used a cookie cutter to cut out the plaque from the leftover fondant, covered it with a thin layer of buttercream, then piped the birthday girls name on front.

I stacked the cakes the day of the party and finished the piping on the bottom tier, I continued the same technique until I reached the bottom of the top tier.

And that was it! Don’t be intimidated by the ruffles, just go for it! The more organic and imperfect the better!
