DIY Boho Flag

Materials:

  • 1 yard muslin or drop cloth
  • Different sizes and widths of lace
  • Acrylic Paint- Blue, Red, and Black (white too if you paint your stars)
  • Paint Brush
  • Bucket
  • Trash bag
  • Scissors
  • rack, clothing line, or shower rod
  • Fabric Glue
  • Safety Pins
  • Binder clips

Start by laying out plastic to protect your work surface, I used a trash bag.

Cut a rectangle out of muslin that is 18″ by 16″

Paint the rectangle with water

Mix Blue acrylic paint with some water and paint fabric

I wanted it to have an uneven finish with some darker areas. It’s ok if it’s a little splotchy.

Hang on rack to dry- I covered my rack with plastic wrap before adding wet fabric to protect it. Be sure to lay plastic on the ground underneath if you are hanging your fabric in an area that can’t get dirty.

Paint another layer of Acrylic Blue mixed with water, about 50/50. I added a tiny dot of black to deepen the shade of blue in some areas

Hang back up to dry

Second coat of acrylic with a little dot of black mixed in

Slice the top edge of you muslin every 1in with scissors

Start ripping fabric to create 1in wide strips, the edges will be frayed, that is what you want.

Place a trash bag in a bucket with about 1/2 cup of water

Add about 1/4 cup of red acrylic paint

Add half of your fabric strips to the water acrylic mixture

Mix using tongs or with your hands if you have gloves

I allowed the strips to sit in the acrylic “dye” for about 10 minutes to soak up as much pigment as possible

I hung them outside on a clothing rack to dry- again, remember to lay plastic underneath of you are in an area that can’t get dirty.

I used binding clips to keep them from blowing away in the wind. Small binder clips would work great for this is as well.

In the sun, the fabric was completely dry in about 30 minutes

I used my cooper backdrop frame to assemble my flag. You can easily use a tension rod with two command hooks on your wall or a clothing rack.

Start hanging the strips over your rod alternating white and red

Add in some lace strips to add some texture and a boho accent

I used my cutting machine to cut out tiny stars, if you don’t have one, you can paint them, or glue white pom poms on instead!

Cut out 50 stars and fabric glue them to your blue rectangle

Glue wide lace to the sides and bottom of your rectangle

Add three safety pins to the top of your square

Pin your square to the strips and then add a long piece of fringe to the top with safety pins as well.

This is perfect behind a food table, photo booth backdrop, or as a wall hanging for your next memorial day or 4th of July BBQ! That’s it’s a little time consuming but very easy and worth it, I absolutely adore how it came out!
