DIY Costume Ideas

We are quickly approaching one of my favorite times of the year, Halloween!! Before having Della, I used to love sitting out on the front porch and handing candy out to the little ones and seeing all of their adorable costumes.

Now I get to partake in the fun and take Della trick or treating! It’s one of the times as a parent, where you get to relive your childhood all over again. Seeing the excitement on her face while she is collecting candy from the neighbors is priceless!

Unfortunately I don’t have a Tutorial for these costumes because I made them for Della before I was blogging. But, I can talk you through what I did! If nothing else, it may help with some ideas and get your creative juices flowing!

First up we have Snow White!

We surprised Della and took her to Disneyland earlier this year. Of course I had to make her some ears! This costume was half DIY half purchased. I found this dress on amazon, yes amazon for the win yet again! The sunglasses are from Target my other favorite shopping hot spot. The Mickey watch is “vintage”! My Dad saved it from when I was a kid and brought it out for Della when we went to Disneyland.

The ears were very easy to make, but they were a little time consuming. I made a template for the ears and traced it onto the 1/4″ craft foam from the craft store. After I cut it out, I covered it with cotton batting to give it more dimension. I then used the same templated to cut out my sequin fabric. I doubled up the fabric so it wouldn’t be see through. I put the right sides together and stitched around the perimeter leaving the bottom unstitched. Just make sure you back stitch on either side so when you are stuffing your ears, you don’t rip the seam. Turn the ears right side out and insert the foam wrapped in batting. I used my trusty hot glue gun to close the seam and to attach the ears to the headband.

For the bow I simply downloaded a template for a stencil, I used glitter craft foam to cut it out and hot glued it to the center of the ears!

Twining with my Best!

Next up is “Animal Doctor Della”

It was career day at her preschool, I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she said, “An Animal Doctor and a Mommy”. I was super excited and off I went rummaging through my craft room to see what I had one hand first before I purchased anything.

This costume is a great DIY option, I used an adult size small t-shirt. I cut it down the center front to make a “lab coat”. I then cut different veggies, tools, and a name tag out of scrap felt I had in the house. Then I of course used my favorite tool on the face of the planet, my hot glue gun, to attach everything. It took about an hour total to make and it was a huge success, Della loved it!

Up next, Princess Poppy!

My manager and friend, Ronnie, helped me pattern and construct this dress. I bought some felt yardage and the wig was made from tulle and a elastic crocheted headband. I simply knotted the tulle to the headband and cut out the headband from felt. You can see more of this costume in my Trolls Party Post!

Minnie Mouse!!!!

She kills me, I mean this little girl is quite the fashionista!

One of my favorites we’ve done so far is Minnie, Donald and Daisy! Della’s costume was half store bought and half handmade. I made her gloves, and ears from felt, and I cut out felt polka dots that I hot glued to her red tulle skirt. I bought a black leotard and added a black tail to the back .

She wore a pair of my ballet shoes from when I was her age, I spray painted them yellow and added a little yellow felt bow on the front!

Jose and I went as Donald and Daisy Duck, per Della’s request! I bought two white baseball hats and painted the brim to be the duckbill and then I went to town with my good ole hot glue, felt, googley eyes, and lashes.

For our costumes, I purchased a blue t-shirt for Jose. I hot glued ribbon and felt to make it look like Donald’s sailor shirt. For Daisy, I simply wore a purple t-shirt, and made a giant skirt out of white tulle. I knotted strips of tulle to pink ribbon and then tied it around my waste. Quick, easy, and affordable. All things we love here at Little Party Girl!

This next one is for all those PJ MASKS fans, CATBOY!!!

I made this costume the night before she had to wear it for school, it was fairly quick and easy. However, I chose to stitch the mask together, you could easily hot glue/fabric glue all the pieces to the mask to make it go much faster.

It was Princess or Superhero day at Della’s preschool, when I asked her what she wanted to be, she said, without hesitation, CATBOY! I never thought I’d be so excited for her to choose Cat Boy! My confident little girl walked into her classroom full of princesses and she was the only girl dressed as a superhero. Go Della, proud Mama!

For the costume, I purchased and Adult small t-shirt. I put the shirt on Della and safety pinned the sides to the desired fit. I then and took a seam from under the sleeve all the way down to the bottom of the shirt on both sides. (where the pins were)

She helped cut out the ears and glue them to hair clips. I made quick felt spats to cover her sneakers (didn’t want to spend money new sneakers). They had velcro on the back to attach them.

I stitched the Catboy logo on the front, I would use some “HeatnBond” to hold it in place so you aren’t fighting with pins while stitching it down. I forgot this step because I was on a time crunch. It came out kinda crooked, but for the night before I was in get it down mode.

A Deer and a little Kitty Cat

This one could have double as Marie from Aristocats or Angela Superstar from Talking Tom and Friends. Della was obsessed with Angela as a baby, my Mother used to sing her the theme song and if she was crying, it would always make her stop.

I bought white tights, leotard, feather boa. I had purple ribbon, pink felt, and white socks on hand. I covered her sneakers with socks and hot glued little pink toe nails to them. I stitched the boa to the leotard for the tail, and make some quick ears from felt and glued the boa to the edges. I attached the ears to a head band and we were all set!

Her favorite part was getting her makeup done, she wasn’t even two years old year and sat perfectly still during the entire application. It was adorable!

For my deer antlers you’ll need:

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Brown Paper bags or newspaper
  • School Glue
  • Water
  • Paint
  • Headband
  • Leather or felt
  • Hot Glue
  • Silk Flowers

I made these the night before from items I had in my house. I started by attached pipe cleanser to the head band and making a rough antler shape.

I then covered them in strips of brown paper bags that I dipped in a mixture of 1/2 school glue and 1/2 water.

While you are waiting for the paper mache to dry, I cut out the ear shapes from scarp craft leather I had in my craft room.

I used my hair dryer to speed up the drying process. Once dry, I painted them with acrylic paint. Added the ears and flowers with hot glue and called it done!

I hope some of these ideas were helpful for you and/or your family this Halloween!
