Cinco de Mayo Styling Tips

Since we are most likely going to still be in quarantine for Cinco de Mayo, I thought it would be fun to put a little set up together! I am going to show you how to dress up your house for a festive day, enjoy some delish Mexican food, and don’t forget the margaritas and coronas! Heck, why not have a virtual Cinco de Mayo party and use this set up as your backdrop!

To start I made a custom Cinco de Mayo banner inspired by traditional Papel Picado banners. I am taking orders for these custom banners, send us an email or DM to place your order. I used the same paper I used for the banner to make a mini paper chain to add interest and texture. These are available for orders as well!

I used adhesive hooks on the wall to hang honeycomb balls on either side of the banner. I buy these whenever I go to the dollar store, they are great to have on hand for so many different themes.

To add one more layer of texture and to mimic the texture of my table cloth, I added these DIY tassels I made a from a few years back. They were the perfect addition.

To set the table, I used my Grandmother’s vintage blanket and layered a Mexican blanket on top for additional dimension. Look around your house for fabric, curtains, blankets etc. that you wouldn’t normally use as a table cloth. Sometimes using an item other than it’s intended purpose is the best use for it!

Always use items that are different heights to add balance and visual interest. I like to use crates a lot to build height, there are a number of ways you can use them. This time, I placed it it’s end to fit the bottle of tequila and the pineapple shakers inside. This frames the items well and gave me a steady surface on top to display items. In addition to the glasses I placed this adorable mini cake stand with two limes on it. I originally had 3 limes up there, 2 on the cake stand and one in front of the cake stand. Unfortunately, I didn’t have an extra lime to slice, so I ended up using one of the three to slice. When possible, group your items in odd numbers.

Mix different materials to add texture. I layered a metal tray with a smaller wooden cutting board for the limes. I also added a wooden cake stand to tie in the wooden crate at the other end of the table.

How cute are these honeycomb picks?! I also found these at the dollar store a few weeks ago! For an additional layer of texture, I stored them in the gold and white paper straws. When you are ready for a slice of fresh lime, remove from the straw and use to pick up your lime!

I added some succulents I had around my house to the wooden cake stand. I had to pull out this DIY mini piñata cake topper I made for a “Taco Twosday” birthday party last year! He’s just the cutest and I’ll take any opportunity I have to show him off!

I hope this inspired you to think outside the box and use items around your house to create a festive set up!
